Dazimon

   Site of a major battle on 22 July 838 between Theophilos (q.v.) and Afshin, general of caliph Mutasim (q.v.). Theophilos's defeat at Dazimon allowed Mutasim to seize Ankara and Amorion (qq.v.). Dazimon is in Pontos (q.v.) and has been variously located at Dazmana, and at Tokat, where a fortress commands the eastern road that ran from Constantinople to Sebasteia (qq.v.).
